Here’s a look at standouts over the past week by Shortstops…
1. Trevor Story – COL (92%)
.400 AVG, 5 R, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB
Season Stats: (95 GP) .292 AVG, 50 R, 20 HR, 68 RBI, 12 SB
Most assumed they had Story pegged as a swing-and-miss, high power, low average shortstop going into they year. While that’s still the case in part, he has managed to cut back on his Ks, and increase his power, and hold an almost .300 average along with a spike in steals. He has been a great value this season.
2. Manny Machado – BAL – 3B, SS (99%)
.346 AVG, 5 R, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 1 SB
Season Stats: (96 GP) .315 AVG, 48 R, 24 HR, 65 RBI, 8 SB
Machado made his case a strong one going into the deadline that saw him dealt to the Dodgers. He seems to be already a good fit in LA, collecting a couple hits in his debut.
3. Didi Gregorius – CHW (92%)
.379 AVG, 7 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 0 SB
Season Stats: (90 GP) .263 AVG, 58 R, 17 HR, 52 RBI, 10 SB
While Didi has cooled off from the mayhem of his early scorching hot start, he reminded everyone that he can still pull a couple homers a week every now-and-again. The power and counting stats he collects at short make him a top selection at the position.
4. Xander Bogaerts – BOS (98%)
.310 AVG, 5 R, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 0 SB
Season Stats: (79 GP) .284 AVG, 47 R, 16 HR, 64 RBI, 2 SB
Bogaerts is showing that last year’s power woes were a fluke due to injury, and hasn’t had to sacrifice average to prove it. His offensive environment certainly doesn’t hurt his value either.
5. Jose Peraza – CIN – 2B, SS (72%)
.520 AVG, 4 R, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 0 SB
Season Stats: (93 GP) .293 AVG, 53 R, 5 HR, 35 RBI, 17 SB
Peraza has continue to hit for average and steal a decent amount of bases. Last week he just got on base like a madman. He’s an interesting deep league option.
6. Adeiny Hechavarria – TB (1%)
.348 AVG, 8 R, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SB
Season Stats: (55 GP) .261 AVG, 29 R, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 1 SB
With Adames sent down it looks like Hech will be getting more playing time for now. While he hit well last week, his offensive value is severely limited.
7. Alberto Mondesi – KC – 2B, SS (2%)
.333 AVG, 3 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 SB
Season Stats: (82 GP) .256 AVG, 38 R, 11 HR, 26 RBI, 4 SB
Mondesi was a highly touted prospect and tore up the minors last year to force a call-up. While his major league appearance last year did not inspire confidence, this is a 22 year old middle infielder who could be a solid across the board contributor if he can regain some of his minor league form. He’s got the pop and speed potential to be interesting.
8. Francisco Lindor – CLE (99%)
.207 AVG, 6 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB
Season Stats: (94 GP) .291 AVG, 85 R, 25 HR, 62 RBI, 13 SB
Lindor continues to be basically the best shortstop this season, in a year when Manny Machado is playing shortstop and demolishing baseballs. He does it all, and is on pace to have a record season.
9. Amed Rosario – NYM (7%)
.346 AVG, 4 R, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 2 SB
Season Stats: (90 GP) .246 AVG, 33 R, 4 HR, 23 RBI, 6 SB
Rosario just doesn’t have the power to impress, but it is good to see him getting on base more often. As he gets more comfortable at the plate we could see his steal potential increase as well.
10. Jorge Polanco – MIN (12%)
.259 AVG, 6 R, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 2 SB
Season Stats: (14 GP) .264 AVG, 7 R, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 3 SB
As Polanco shakes off the rust after his suspension, he is beginning to show some value. He went close to 15/15 last season so he has some deep league potential.
