Week 9 Recap (RP Adds SV+HLD Leagues)

12 Team Standard scoring settings/ roster %s

Ben Joyce – LAA – SP/RP (12%)

2023/ 3 G: 0 W, 0 SV, 1 HLD, 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, 3 IP/5 K/0 BB

AA/ 27 G: 5 SV, 3.45 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 28.2 IP/44 K/17 BB

In his debut Monday vs the White Sox tossed 11 sinkers averaging 101.3 mph with a high of 102.2 mph, 10 of his 12 pitches were for strikes. Jose Quijada is done for the season, Matt Moore was recently placed on the IL. Joyce could work into high leverage with Devenski setting up Estevez and has added value in Yahoo leagues given SP eligibility.

Phil Maton – HOU (8%)

2023/ 24 G: 0 W, 0 SV, 4 HLD, 0.98 ERA, 0.65 WHIP, 27.2 IP/30 K/4 BB

2022/ 67 G: 0 W, 0 SV, 14 HLD, 3.84 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 65.2 IP/73 K/24 BB

Maton has had a pretty underwhelming career (4.21 ERA, 1.30 WHIP – 299 G) bouncing from San Diego and Cleveland from 2017 – 2021, before settling in with the Astros in 2021. Maton was decent last season but has been unhittable so far this season. Despite the poor career numbers has had solid underlying metrics placing in the top 5% percentile in exit velocity, XSLG, and hardhit% in 2018, 2020, 2022, and this season. Maton has drastically dropped BB% from 9.2% – 3.2%, raising his K% from 25.8% – 31.6%. While his current numbers are likely unsustainable has moved into a higher-leverage role and is finally receiving hold opportunities. Rogue saves might be difficult given he is behind Neris and Abreu, setting up closer Ryan Pressly.

Grant Anderson – TEX – RP (3%)

2023/ 2 G: 1 W, 0 SV, 1 HLD, 0.00 ERA, 0.55 WHIP, 3.2 IP/8 K/0 BB

AAA/ 11G: 1 W, 1 SV, 3.80 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 21.1 IP/38 K/10 BB.

Vs DET on Tuesday his major league debut: 2.2 IP/7 K, 1 H. Hopefully can soon work high leverage consistently, other than Brock Burke the bullpen is struggling. Jonathan Hernandez – 5.66 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, Josh Sborz – 4.76 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, Jose Leclerc – 3.52 ERA, 1.57 WHIP. Worked the 8th inning on Friday picking up his first career hold setting up closer Will Smith.

Dauri Moreta – PIT (2%)

2023/ 24 G: 3 W, 1 SV, 2 HLD, 1.69 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 26.2 IP/37 K/13 BB

2022/ 35 G: 0 W, 1 SV, 1 HLD, 5.40 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 38.1 IP/39 K/13 BB (w/ CIN)

Moreta has a limited track record only appearing in 39 games with Cincinnati in 2021 and 2022, before being traded to Pittsburgh for Kevin Newman in 2023. While his BB% is high at 13.3% up from 8.1% has raised K% drastically from 24.4% – 36.7% ranking in the top 3% of League. Moreta also ranks in the top 4% percentile in XBA – .171 and WOBA – .227. Despite his strong numbers only has 3 holds but has worked high leverage and should see more hold opportunities going forward.

Trevor Richards – TOR – SP/RP (1%)

2023/ 19 G: 0 W, 0 SV, 8 HLD, 3.24 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 25 IP/39 K/12 BB

2022/ 62 G: 3 W, 0 SV, 8 HLD, 5.34 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 64 IP/82 K/35 BB

Richards has moved from starting to relieving throughout his career with 56 career starts in 197 G on five different teams. While his ratios were poor last season had 82 K in 64 IP (29.2%) this season as a full-time reliever has improved even further (35.9%). His BB% remains an issue after finishing in the bottom 4% of League (12.5%) it has improved slightly (11.7%). While Richards has only seen hold opportunities recently and remains a risky option given the ratio risk has added value in Yahoo leagues – can be utilized in starting pitching slots.
